What does the Boston Tea Party and coffee have in common?

4th of July will be here before we know it and everyone here at BUNN® wants to wish you and your family a safe and happy 4th of July holiday.

As we get ready to celebrate the 235th birthday of the United States, we could also celebrate how the same American colonists who shaped America’s birth also played a role in the adoption of coffee in America.   Why?  Well, if you remember from school history class, England placed a heavy tax on tea.  Early American colonists were angry about this taxation.  They revolted against the heavy tax by throwing tea into the Boston Harbor, thus creating the Boston Tea Party.  The Boston Tea Party not only set the events of America’s revolution into motion[1], but it also marked a turn to coffee as America’s drink.[2] Yes, since the Boston Tea Party, coffee has been the drink of choice for many Americans.  In fact, today 54% of American adults drink coffee every day!
